Google Pixel 2 Launched: A $649 Disappointment

Google has announced the second generation of their Pixel smartphones today. Just like most of the flagships nowadays, the fans get two variants of the phone named as Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Both the phones might have been demonstrated with the best way possible but so far the on-paper specifications are a downside for everyone except Apple. The event might have come with some great announcements on Daydream, Google Home or Nest security part but it was not something that Pixel fans were expecting, especially after the launch of iPhone 8 and X, Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL definitely doesn't stand a chance against them (on-paper so far).

Pixel 2 has a 5-inch FHD AMOLED display with a ratio of 16:9, while the Pixel 2 comes with a 6-inch pOLED display with a QHD resolution. Despite being a bigger phone, Pixel 2 XL is still very much handy to the hands. Also, despite every flagship like the recent Apple iPhone 8 or Samsung Note 8 has a bezel-less display, the Google Pixel 2 still maintain those bezels, it has reduced to a great extent but still not a great achievement.

Unlike Apple, Google has respected both of their smartphones with same camera specifications with both the variants getting 12.2-megapixel shooter at the back. Yes, there is no dual-camera setup kind of thing. Though Google does claim a great machine learning on the camera hand and confirms pro modes like Portrait, HRD+, at the end of the day, all these will be on a software end only and a phone with actual dual-camera setup will work better than the Pixel 2 can ever promise. It might be too early to say anything but the hope is very minimal. Though Pixel 2 scored a DXOMARK of 98 which is better than iPhone 8 (94), DXOMARK score depends on hardware part and not how the software and how great photos a smartphone can take. The phone does have OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) which will just work fine.

The phone has an Active Edge kind of technology just like HTC U11 which also the side panel of the phone to act as a pressure sensitive hardware to take certain commands. By default, it will be activating the Google Assistant for the user.

Despite a good DXOMARK score, the Pixel 2 camera sounds doubtful and most of the focus was on the Google Assistant, UI, and Augmented Reality. Google is also offering 23GB of free Photos storage which can be used to upload the videos and photos taken on Pixel 2 and 2 XL.

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, both are Water Resistant IP67 certified device with USB 3.1 support. The part that disappointed would be the processor and RAM, both the variants are rocking Snapdragon 835 SoC with 4GB of RAM. The same processor which even a 5-month old mid-budget comes with! Why Google Why?

On the positive part, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will both be running on the latest Android version for at least first few years of their lives. But the price is not something that should be paid just for Android updates and Google branding! The Pixel 2 is tagged at $649 while the big brother comes at $849.
